FLW COLLEGE FISHING SOUTHERN CONFERENCE FINALE SET FOR RED RIVER

NATCHITOCHES, La. (Sept. 8, 2015) – FLW College Fishing is headed to the Red River September 19 for the third and final regular-season tournament in the Southern Conference. A full field of college teams will be competing for a top award of $2,000 and a berth in the Southern Conference Championship tournament.

“The water has been muddy, so I know the fishing will be great for this tournament,” said Walmart FLW Tour legend Larry Nixon of Bee Branch, Arkansas, who posted a 5th place finish in the 2013 Forrest Wood Cup on the Red River.

“There are a couple of different patterns that will be popular,” said Nixon. “Anglers will be tackling bass on the main river and in the backwaters. I could see many of them fishing rocks, wood and jetties with Chartreuse-colored crankbaits and possibly even spinnerbaits and buzzbaits. This is the time of year when bass are feeding heavily on shad, so flipping main-river cattails using Pearl White-colored creature baits could also prove to be a good strategy.

“In the backwaters they’ll be looking for submerged, grassy points,” Nixon continued. “The water is much clearer so I could see a Carolina- or Texas-rigged worm doing really well. Competitors may also reach for jigs or buzzbaits, but there would need to be some lily pads in the area.

Nixon said he thinks a five-bass stringer nearing 19 pounds will be enough to take home top honors.

“It could take over 20 pounds, but someone would have to get really lucky,” said Nixon.

Anglers will take off from the Grand Ecore Recreation Area ramp, located at 1071 Tauzin Island Road in Natchitoches, at 7 a.m. CST Saturday. Weigh-in will be held at the landing beginning at 3 p.m. Takeoff and weigh-in are free and open to the public.
