Dobyns DX 795 Flip Review
Flipping is one of my favorite techniques. For one, it allows me to accurately make multiple presentations to a piece of cover in a short amount of time, thus increasing my chances of getting a bite. Secondly, it gives me the opportunity to cover water and target high percentage spots. Lastly, I can present my bait to the fish with minimal splash or noise. In order to be successful at flipping, I need a rod that is long, has a strong backbone to pull those fish out of cover, and enough tip to be accurate with my presentation. Today I will tell you what the Dobyns DX 795 Flip brings to the table and why it’s an excellent for flipping. The DX 795 comes from Dobyns’ Champion Extreme line, their premier series of rods. Creator Gary Dobyns spared no expense in this series and you’ll notice it when to hold one of these rods. The DX 795 is categorized as a 7’9″ medium heavy flip with a fast action. The rod is rated for lures 1/4-2oz with the rod’s sweet spot being around 1oz. Some people believe that to be a good flipping stick you need to have a broom stick and while this will be effective in some situations, it’s my experience it can fail in others. For instance, when flipping and punching vegetation a rod with a small amount of tip acts as a shock suppressor to handle the surge a big fish can give and helps prevent the hook from ripping a hole in their mouth and getting away.
Another big advantage this rod gives you is the long handle. The DX 795 comes with a 15 1/4″ long handle. This really give you the leverage needed to get that big fish turned around and coming to the boat. The handle is AAA grade cork which gives the rod an awesome feel. The reel seat is a Fugi that fits great in your hand. The rod guides have recently been updated to zero tangle Kigan guides with Zirconium inserts. These inserts are smooth and cut down on friction. It also seems to be a bit quieter with braided line.
The DX 795 is extremely sensitive. It’s amazing what all you can feel with this rod especially when paired with braid. The customer service at Dobyns is second to none. They offer a limited lifetime warranty to cover a defect and a replacement policy if a rod was broken due to misuse. If a customer has any questions about the correct rod for a specific application, just give them a call at the shop and they’ll be more than happy to talk rods all day long.
The Dobyns DX 795 Flip is a great rod. It’s my workhorse day in and day out. Hope you have an opportunity to check this rod and several others in the Dobyns line. They can be purchased directly from Dobyns, Tackle Warehouse, and select dealers in your area.
